Get the right look for your wedding style: Beach, Vintage and Whimsical/Bohemian

July 3rd, 2013

When choosing a hair style for your wedding day, you want something that is going to work with the style of your wedding. Take a look at your venue, is it traditional or modern? Is your wedding indoor or outdoor? Is it on the beach? The most important thing to look at is your wedding dress. There are so many styles out there today and you want to have an idea of what the overall look of your wedding is. This week I will talk about three popular wedding styles beach, vintage and whimsical or bohemian.

If you are having a beach wedding there are a lot of things to consider when choosing a hair style. The first item to think about is how formal your wedding will be. Most beach wedding are less formal and you can look beautiful with a more casual look, such as wearing your hair down with a beachy wave and a colorful flower. If your dress requires a more formal look, you may consider doing your hair in an updo instead. One thing that will be out of your control is the weather. A beach wedding will always come with a breeze and salt water in the air, two of the things we love about the beach! But you will want to be sure that your hair can withstand the elements. The best way to do this is to stay away from highly polished looks. By going with a softer do, you will never have to worry about a piece falling out of place or a bit of frizz working against you. The right products and technique will also make a huge difference in making sure your hairstyle endures. The most important thing when choosing a beach wedding hairstyle is to know what your hair normally does on the beach! Does your hair tend to flatten out or frizz uncontrollably with humidity? If so, you will want to go with an up style so that your hair will last the night. Also consider whether it will be too hot with your hair down, you want to be comfortable throughout your day. Whichever style you choose, dress it up! A tropical flower or a wreath of flowers is very fitting for a beach wedding, especially in a tropical location. Another fun option is using seashells or starfish and seahorse hair ornaments.

Something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue. If your wedding has a vintage feel to it, your hairstyle could be your something old, or something borrowed from the era of your choice! From the finger waves and tight pin curls of the 20’s and 30’s to the looser waves and victory rolls from the 40’s and 50’s, there are so many styles to choose from. What was once old is always new again and many of the styles seen today are variations of these old fashioned styles. If going all out vintage is a little much, you can still enjoy a hint of vintage style with a more modern twist to it. Soft finger waves in the front of your hair with a more modern updo or loose curls are examples of achieving a subtle vintage look. For your makeup, you want a very clean look. A classic winged liner and red lip is a good example of this and is very Old Hollywood glam. You can also go with a softer smoky eye or a nude lip. Vintage hairstyles are beautifully detailed and sculpted. I always highly recommend a trial hair and makeup run for every bride but I feel it is of upmost importance with a vintage style, especially if you have never seen yourself with this type of hair style before.

In modern usage, the term bohemian is applied to people who live unconventional, usually artistic, lives. Whimsical can mean tending toward odd or unpredictable behavior, and could refer to an odd object or piece of clothing. Given to whimsy or fanciful notions; capricious, pixyish, fun, eclectic, innocent, charming, eccentric, avant-garde, pretty, quirky, odd, unconventional, original, mysterious, quaint, antiquated, charismatic, alluring. With that definition, a whimsical or bohemian style wedding can be anything that is unconventional; maybe it’s artistic, a little off beat or a fantasy wedding. A wedding like this gives you a lot of free reign with your hair and makeup style. Let your originality shine! Anything goes with this style of wedding; braids, curls, crimps and even frizz! Messy or loose flowing hair and braids are common in whimsical styles with wreaths of flowers, baby’s breath and jeweled or old fashioned head pieces and hair clips as accents in the hair. This type of look is perfect for the girl with a little hippie in her, who wants to have a unique look on her big day.
