Protecting your hair from the sun and swimming this summer

July 23rd, 2013

This summer has been a hot one, and what better way to stay cool than a nice dip in the pool or days at the beach? While it may feel refreshing it can also wreak havoc on your hair. But no need to sweat it (pun intended), you can enjoy the summer and have great hair with a few simple tricks.

There are two things about your hair that can be affected by the summer elements; the color of your hair and the health of your hair.

If you color your hair, it is so important to use the right hair products all year round to ensure lasting color. This is even more important during the summer time were the sun and chlorine can accelerate fading.

  • Always use professional “color protecting” shampoo and conditioner – these products are designed to be much more gentle on your hair then drug store products and can significantly extend the life of your color as well as improve the health of your hair.
  • Just like your body, your hair needs sunscreen. There are hair products that have SPF build right in them such as Redken Color Extend Sun Solar Screen SPF 12, or you can even use regular sunscreen on your hair.
  • Before swimming wet your hair with clean fresh water so that it will absorb less salt and chlorine.
  • Apply some type of protective barrier to your hair before swimming as well; this could be conditioner, a hair serum or sunscreen
  • Always wash your hair immediately after swimming, or as soon as possible, especially when swimming in chlorine.
  • After swimming use a clarifying shampoo, such as Kms California Hair Stay Clarifying Shampoo, which will remove more of the minerals from you hair then a regular shampoo.
  • Once a week, apply a deep conditioning mask, like NEUMA neuMoisture Intensive Masque, to rejuvenate your hair from the drying affects of sun, salt and chlorine.
  • At the end of the summer, or every month if you swim in chlorine often and feel a buildup on our hair, see your hair stylist for a Malibu MakeOver Treatment. This will remove all of the harsh chemical buildup from your hair and you will feel the difference immediately.

Just a few simple steps will make a big difference to the health and color of your hair this summer. Happy swimming!
